The General Method
Pitted Acne Scars
If This Does Not Work Well Enough For You
The Method By The Numbers
Subcision or Needling to Break Down Scars Followed by Copper Peptides

The General Method

1. Using hydroxy acids will slowly loosen and dissolve scar tissue. For most people the Skin Biology hydroxy acids work well. If you have very tough scar tissue you may need a stronger hydroxy acid to get strong effects. People with high skin oil seem to have very tough scars.

2. Strong copper peptides help keep irritation down and create an environment conducive for the rebuilding of new skin to replace the lost scar tissue.

3. As scar tissue is replaced by healthy skin, the skin, like an elastic balloon, pulls itself smooth.

To find the best products to reduce acne, try the Acne Scar Reduction Test Kit

The key is to improve your skin without causing more breakouts. The Test Kit helps you to determine best products for your skin.

If you have continuing problems with breakouts, the safest products to reduce the appearance of acne scars are lipid-free products - Super CP Serum (a strong copper-peptide oil-free formula) and LacSal Serum - an aqueous 10% hydroxy acid serum containing both lactic acid and salicylic acid). First try Super CP Serum and LacSal Serum - 10% hydroxy acid, or use Exfol Serum - 2% hydroxy acid. These are the easiest on skin. Use Super CP Serum in the morning and the hydroxy acid of your choice in the evening. Rub the products into the scar area. Test this combination for 2 weeks and see how they work. If your skin becomes irritated, use smaller amounts of the products.

If the Super CP Serum and LacSal Serum are tolerated by your skin, then try to see how your skin does with the Super Cop Cream plus LacSal Cream. Use the Super Cop Cream as a spot treatment in the morning and LacSal Cream in the evening. This is a better way to work on scars, but may cause breakouts. If you experience no breakouts, then try this method for 2 weeks.

After this you can decide which method (Super CP Serum & LacSal Serum vs. Super Cop & LacSal Cream) has the best potential for improving your skin.

Pitted Acne Scars

Pitted acne scars often respond well to these methods. Pitted scars are difficult to remove with traditional dermatological techniques that try to remove scars rapidly.

The key with pitted acne is to rub LacSal Serum or Exfol Serum into the pitted scar on a daily basis. This slowly dissolves and removes the scar tissue. In the morning use a copper peptide product (either Super CP Serum, Super Cop Cream, or Super Cop Cream 2X Extra Strength). This helps stimulate a slow rebuilding of your skin. As the scar tissue is replaced with healthy skin, the skin's surface pulls itself flat like a balloon.

Most people use the beta hydroxy acid at one time of the day, such as in the evening and the copper peptide in the morning.

Some people use this method but also use a 30% glycolic acid twice weekly to speed the process.

If This Does Not Work Well Enough For You

Stronger alpha or beta hydroxy acids will speed the procedure but also increase the chances of irritation or chemical burns. A 2% salicylic acid is about equivalent to a 10% glycolic acid in terms of exfoliation and scar removal. The Skin Biology LacSal Serum is a 10% hydroxy acid at pH 3.2. Some customers and clinics use stronger salicylic acids or 30% to 70% hydroxy acids to loosen and dissolve the scar tissue then apply the copper peptide product.

Such stronger hydroxy acids can be obtained from Estheticians and Dermatologists at spas and clinics or from www.makeupartistschoice.com, www.platinumskincare.com or see: Skin Biology Resellers Page.

The Method By The Numbers

1. In the morning, apply copper peptide product (either Super CP Serum, Super Cop Cream, or Super Cop Cream 2X Extra Strength) to the acne scar.

2. In the evening, use hydroxy acid exfoliant (LacSal Cream or LacSal Serum or use Exfol Cream) on the scar.

3. You can apply more hydroxy acid during the day. But reduce the amount if your skin become irritated.

4. The key is to keep working on the scar. Some have used methods of manual exfoliation (such as microdermabrasion cloths, scrubs, or skin brushes) with success.

5. You can use the copper peptide products in the evening if you do not wish to use it in the morning because of the blue color.

6. If after two months, there is little improvement, then use a stronger hydroxy acid.

Subcision or Needling to Break Down Scars Followed by Copper Peptides

In this procedure, a needle (such as tattoo needle) disrupts the scar collagen and stimulates replacement of newly formed collagen. Best results are achieved with several sessions. This is often used on pitted acne scars or at the margins of face lifts. Some scars may be too deep and too hard for hydroxy acids to effective loosen.

Another idea is that certain scars form a barrier wall or "zone-of-stasis" that blocks the body's scar removal systems. Scar-clearing macrophages cannot penetrate the barrier and blood vessels will not grow through the barrier.  The subcision breaks down this barrier and allows the body to begin dissolving the scar tissue.

Some estheticians tell us that they use CP Serum or TriReduction after the needling and see a much better and faster clearing of the scars. However, do not apply the copper peptides until the wound has scabbed over and is no longer open or oozing liquid.

Skin Renewal Testimonials

Most of the following customers used our weaker creams for scar reduction. The new products are even more effective. Some comments have been edited for length and clarity.

I just wished to thank you for your excellent products. I have been using copper-peptides for about 7 weeks now, for the last few weeks I have been using Super Cop 2X, putting it on my acne scars with a small metal spatula (actually a tool from a manicure set!). For exfoliation I have been using Exfol Cream and a dermabrasion cloth. For the last week I have been using the dermaroller.

The effect on my skin and in particular upon my scars is amazing. My scars have improved so much I no longer need to wear make up. And from being quite noticeable on both cheeks you now have to peer hard to see them. Thank you so much. I shall be building my collection of Skin Biology products as and when I can.

N.A., Scotland

I just wanted to thank you, Dr. Pickart, for all your hard work and lifelong dedication of applying chemistry to help people. I have been using Skin Bio products for 2.5 months and have seen a huge improvement in my acne scars. I have suffered from acne as a teen and finally cleared up at around age 23. But had scars on cheeks, jaw line, and side of temples. Makeup always drew attention towards my scars and I have always been ashamed of them. I tried the dermatologist thing, was signed up to get fraxel lasering (which I was really apprehensive about doing because it may cause more damage than good) and cost $900 a treatment and I was going to need 4-5 treatments.

Then I found your company and starting using the Acne Scar Reduction Kit. It seemed a bit slow at first, but I used the products everyday and never had any irritation. After testing the starter kit, I used the Exfol Cream and TriReduction with Retinol and spot treated with Super Cop 2X. After a month, I started using 40% lactic acid and 15% fruit acid gel in place of the Exfol Cream, still using the TriReduction with Retinol and Super Cop 2X. While I didn't expect overnight success or complete eradication of the scar tissue, I did get what I expected after 3 months:

My overall skin tone is bright, many scars have gotten smaller, less red, and the indented scar areas I had have become more even level with the rest of the skin, and I have a more even skin tone. My acne scars are truly less noticeable and I am comfortable with my skin now and feel really good about myself every time I examine my skin in the mirror.

I just wanted to take the time to thank you for all your help and for offering these products at a reasonable price. I would have spent a kabillion more dollars with fraxel lasering and no telling what I would have gotten. I am going to continue using the products for a long time and I have also tried the Folligen Cream on my eyelashes, and wow they have grown fuller and longer and they look good.

Thank you so much, I feel very blessed to have found your products.

L.C.

I've been using a lot of your products (CP Serum, Super CP Serum, Exfol Serum, CP Night Eyes, Tri-Reduction and Super Cop) for two years ...I started spot treating pitted scars with Super Cop and a stronger version of salicylic acid and the results are fantastic!...I'd like to tell you all about what I did (I'm thinking the result borders on the unbelievable)...I was getting a bit impatient and I remember reading from one of your articles that to see faster results, one should become a bit more aggressive with the acids and try for the stronger copper peptides [Skin Remodeling Copper-Peptides]. Since I was a bit perturbed with the possible onset of pimples as a reaction to the Super Cop, I tried this Clear Pores Medicated Gel (from skinrxclinic.com) in the AM (whole leaf aloe, colloidal silver, 15% glycolic acid, 2% salicylic acid..., and alternated with a 10% hydroquinone 10% tret compound (from greatskin.com). At night, I applied a very thin film (maybe 2-3 drops) of very diluted super CP Serum on my entire face and neck, then with a fine brush dotted (a bit liberally) Super Cop on the pitted scars (and sometimes in the afternoon for a twice a day application). Did this for a week. The peeling agents truly peeled and scabs quickly formed on the spots I had concentrated on.

After 3 or 4 days (so on the 10th or 11th day of the program), the crusted stuff fell off and I swear, the two deepest and longest scars that I have been trying to get rid off since forever became non-existent! At most, if I really stare hard, long and up close, I can see a small pinprick-like pore. I really wish I had documented this with pictures so I can submit them to you ...I can't get beyond being amazed with this result at so short a period.

Once again, thank you very much!

R.L.

Your web site came to my attention after reading rave reviews from the acne forum at healthboards.com. Your help is very much appreciated.

James @yahoo.co.uk

I purchased the Acne Scar Reduction Kit and cannot believe the incredible results. I have NEVER felt compelled to contact any company with a compliment or testimonial. I have suffered from acne most of my life. I have acne scars that have been on my face for many years. I do not, and have never, avoided the sun, so I suppose I have sun damage along with 36 year-old problematic skin (such as fine lines, oily skin, acne, etc.).

I have used $300 magic potions and $3 drug store remedies and everything in between. I have used Proactiv Acne System and still had acne and it created more discoloration on my face. I have been on Tetracycline and Accutane and still had acne, along with dry skin which I never in my life have had. I have used everything on all the shopping channels, some were expensive and promised the unbelievable (Serious Skin Care, Isomers, Murad, etc.). Some of them even condemned colored copper, although when I used their colorless copper, NOTHING happened - empty promises.

I stumbled across your web site and it was so detailed and the prices were so reasonable that I felt "what the heck, I've tried everything else". THANK YOU!!! The discoloration has been significantly reduced. I haven't even used the entire bottles of CP and Exfol serums and the results are unbelievable. I can't wait to see the results as I continue using these products. I do have some acne break-outs although not nearly as bad, nor do they leave the discoloration. I am anxious to explore some of your other products.

Thank you, again, for the fabulous products along with the science and information posted on your web site

AY, Pennsylvania

Success!

Thank you for all your wonderful advice. The CP Serum is working great on my skin. My face feels more "normal" now and I don't have to soak it with moisturizers anymore, (although I still need a little moisturizer over the CP Serum) For your studies (you said you keep records of what is working for people), I have using CP Serum and Azelex (20%) every day. I use the CP Serum 2 times per day and the Azelex at night. I haven't used the Exfol Serum because the cream made my acne-prone skin break out and I also discovered that applying hydroxies with Azelex is too much and that the Azelex is working as an exfoliator. My sun spots are less, my face looks brighter and more even toned and fresher and the small lines around my eyes have about disappeared. Also, a mole under my chin is starting to get smaller--something I hadn't counted on or even purchased the copper for!! I had a professional peel yesterday and applied CP Serum afterward and my skin looks great this morning. So I hope this helps you in your research.

Thanks and hope my information helps your studies,
K @comcast.com

First things first. I've been using Tri-Reduction and Exfol Cream for one month, and I want to thank you for the great results I've seen. My skin is much smoother and I have seen some acne scarring dissipate and some become less noticeable. *****Very Good!!******

My question is this - If I continue with the same program of Exfol Cream and Tri-Reduction, do you think I can expect even more acne scar reduction? (I have also been using 30% glycolic peel once a week for 3 weeks, though I can't tell if this is doing anything.) These scars aren't all that deep, and only are noticeable in certain light. I plan to continue my daily regimen for another month or two and see what happens. Is it possible the more stubborn scars will just require more time?

My deep gratitude for your web site and products,

JB @excite.com

Skin Biology - The progress should continue. Sometimes it takes months to completely remove scars.

Hi, I am 43 year old female, and have had cystic acne since my early 30's which has left bad scars ...I had a deep chemical peel at a salon several weeks ago ...after I peeled they told me to wear a sunscreen (over the counter)...I had a bad burn reaction and parts of my face seemed to be burned all over again...the only help I got from the salon was cortisone cream, which I felt was not good, so I searched the net and found you and started reading and your info made sense to me...so I ordered and the CP Serum and Emu Oil helped to heal my face within a week of getting it (glad it came quick!) ...so, then I went back to the salon for one of my follow-up appts. to get my face cleansed of impurities that the peel brings out, well they told me that my face was healed enough to go back to using the glycolic acid wash that I have used for over a year prior to the deep peel...so I used it the following two mornings and it burned my face again ....needless to say that for a third burn in such a short period, this really hurt!....mostly around my eyes (yes, they told me to use it around my eyes 20% glycolic) ...now I am totally burned around my eyes and have been swelling badly when I awake in the mornings...also scabs have formed around my eyes and more wrinkles have appeared than before....the only thing that has given me any relief is your Protect & Restore #3 and Emu Oil...

Thank you very much for your products ...I feel my face would not be healing as well without your products...in the future, I will not be getting anymore deep peels.....

TM @yahoo.com

Skin Biology - Strong peels can be overdone. Milder hydroxy acids work slower but are much safer.

I tried the Acne Scar TriReduction Test Kit in November last year. I followed the routine use Exfol Serum in AM and CP Serum in evening. However, there was no change on my pitted scar. I started to replace the CP Serum with TriReduction. I found it started to have some effect on the pitted scar. Some scars turned a bit red. Others turned from red to flatten up. However, some scars on the forehead remain unchanged. (Those scars were small but pitted and I rubbed TriRed every night.) I still want to continue the treatment. Please advice.

ML @yahoo.com

Skin Biology -
The test kit is to decide what works best for yourself. Exfol Cream and Trireduction P&R basic may work best for you.

Stronger hydroxys may also speed things up. There are links on the www.scar-reduction.com web site to sellers. 2oz of a 30% glycolic is about $60 to $80. Lasers or deep peels might also work but that is about $500 to $2,000.

I just have to say that I really like the CP Serum.  I've only used it for 3 weeks with a glycolic acid cream and its worked rather quickly on my acne scars ...really diminishing! I can't wait to see what will happen in more time using it on the scars!  I will recommend it to friends! Thanks!

DB, Ohio

Hello, I ordered some Exfol Serum and CP Serum and I would just like to say it works wonders for some acne scars that I have, great stuff and its only been 3 weeks. ...I am 21 year old male.

A @hotmail.com,

I'm a middle-aged male who had bad adult acne in my 20's. I got your scar reduction sampler last year to try on my pitted acne scars. But I didn't really start it as I soon opted for microdermabrasion sessions costing $500. The results seemed negligible. I rediscovered the Tri-Reduction samplers in my cabinet and committed myself to try them. After less than a week, the pitted scars reduced more that all the (sometimes painful) sessions of dermabrasion achieved. The skin areas look smoother and healthier as well, with reduced wrinkles. It's amazing how much expensively advertised junk there is out there that people will try when your product seems to be the real deal.

L.S., Maryland

I definitely noticed a difference with the CP Serum. I'm very acne prone, and I have a big problem with scarring - not only the red marks left over after a bump heals, but also with slight pitting from some of the deep, cystic stuff. I found that if I applied a drop of CP Serum every night until the cyst healed, it wouldn't leave a pit or even a slight indention. It always healed to a flat, red mark that eventually faded away.

Shannon @ delphiforums.com

I started using Trireduction and an exfoliator for a ugly dark gray scar on my nose from an auto accident when I was a kid [45 now] and some other acne pit scars too. Well, along the pitting were some broken capillaries too. You guessed it! They have remarkable decreased and some have disappeared. My scars are filling in and the ugly gray one is light gray and turning a light silvery color and the texture is nearly that of normal skin. If you want to give it a go. I say get some samples. I've never used anything that even comes close to this stuff.

Cynthia @ delphiforums.com

My skin looks much better! I'm controlling breakouts well. In the morning, I wash, then apply CP Serum, then alpha lipoic acid. At night, I use Retin A. If I have any breakouts, I put benzoyl peroxide over everything.

M.V., Texas

I had acne scars on my face and chest and tried every antibiotic and drugs like Accutane for 30 years without much luck. I used BioHeal AM and PM on the scars - putting it on thick - and in about three weeks they started fading and filling in. The outlines of the scars just started fading away. Some big, ugly lesions and red spots were gone in 3 weeks. Laugh lines and furrows also filled in.

T.M., Tennessee

Skin Biology - Trireduction generally works better but some people prefer BioHeal for scar reduction

My son is getting unbelievably good results with the TriReduction Combo Basic. He had raised keloid scars on his back from acne. They were about the size of a silver dollar. For years we tried everything we could think of and went to doctors and derms and all they said was blah, blah, blah. They said if we tried to reduce the scars they would get worse.

After two weeks of TriReduction the scars started to flatten and get smaller. The way things are progressing, we think that one more order of the TriReduction Combo Basic should clear his back of scars.

D.J., British Columbia

I have received my order of the 2-Step Renewal System several days ago and have been using it for several days.  I've found that my face has craved a lot less moisturizer. One acne spot (from weeks ago which didn't seem to want to go away) has finally cleared up.  Thank you for such a great product.

V. T. @idirect.com

I use Protect & Restore Classic Cream, but I would recommend getting their sampler pack to try several to figure out what's best for your skin (I thought 3 would be best for me, but my face just couldn't tolerate the lavender oil -which surprised me because I don't typically have "sensitive" skin). All of the formulas (I know it's overwhelming, but there's some repetition, so it's not too bad!) are listed on skinbio.com. For $10 you get to try 3 kinds of P&R that you pick.

I had a few old acne marks that it seems to have cleared up, but I had no severe marks. It really has evened out my skin tone, and I seem to be less oily in my T-zone. P&R also has helped clear up a scar that I got over my lip (neighbor's cat) when I was 13 - and I'm 31 now! I couldn't believe it - it's hardly visible at ALL now. You might consider trying some kind of lightener for hyperpigmentation (with hydroquinone and kojic acid), but those take 5-7 weeks to work so you must be patient. I had some hyperpigmentation (from birth control pills, I think), and I was able to get rid of it using a lightener (by Natura Bisse - intensive lightening complex -- but many companies make this type of product - i think they also all
contain some kind of alcohol so you have to watch for skin drying, and adjust accordingly). I actually think this, in conjunction with the P&R, helped fade the old acne marks (and wearing Sunblock always!) - and helped with the skin tone. For cleansing, I use Sage Corrective Grains and Sage Facial Shampoo. I also use sage's smoothing cream (12%).

L.J. @Beautybuzz.com

I have had somewhat severe acne for a couple years now.  I finally started a treatment of Accutane late last year, so my skin is really clearing up and I no longer get breakouts. However, due to the years of severe breakouts, I have pretty bad scarring on my cheeks and chin.  After trying a couple sample packs (I HAD to play with ALL the formulas!) of P&R products in September of last year, I ordered the Bioheal.  Well, here I am, about 3 months later, and my scars are really diminishing.  Yes, they are still there, but they are not as glaringly obvious.  I will definitely try the new TriReduction Cream after my Bioheal is gone.  One other thing I really liked about the Bioheal was the cooling sensation from the menthol.  Because of the Accutane, my skin is very sensitive.  But, the Bioheal was a refreshing treat for my skin.

Is it ok to use the TriReduction Cream twice a day or will this irritate my skin?

Thanks a lot!

R.P. @twcable.com
You can use Trireduction twice a day but reduce its use if your skin becomes irritated.

The TriReduction is working well in removing an acne scar from my chin. Previously I tried several Estee Lauder products (Diminish for $47.50, Resilience Lift for $70.00 and Re-Nutriv Intensive Lifting Cream for $150.00) and all of these did nothing. TriReduction did more in a few days than all these creams ever did.

By the way, the regular P&R did not do much for my skin but the Trireduction is working very well.

R.E., New York

Skin Biology response - The Trireduction cream has three times the level of copper-peptides of the regular P&R cream.

I began using the TriReduction creams on my face and I could see improvement immediately! I also use P&R#3, BioHeal, CP Serum, Exfol Serum and Day Cover in rotational patterns (experimenting with those products). Every product is incredible! My skin glows, the acne scarring appears to be healing, and the pores are smaller! MIRACLE!

How could I forget, I don't breakout anymore, anywhere! Yes, I was still getting zits. Sometimes very swollen - would last for a couple of months acne - on the "bank breaking" program! Now I don't even have to worry that I'm going to wake up with a blemish of any kind, on my face. I know that with the use of these products that my skin is healthy and healing. For the first time in thirteen years of having skin problems, my face glows, feels and is looking flawless as a treasured porcelain doll. With all my heart, thank you ...Truly, they are miracle creams.

S.D., Colorado

I am a 51 year old woman with acne scarring and sun damage on my face. I started using TriReduction P&R with Retinol and Exfol Cream two weeks ago and I'm really pleased with what they are doing for my skin.  Thank you for these products and your terrific web site

I've been mixing the TriReduction P&R with Retinol and the Exfol Cream in equal parts and smoothing them over my cheeks twice a day.  At night I follow with Retin-A about an hour later.  In the morning I use your products under my sunscreen and make-up.  I find myself applying them to more and more of my face each day and have had no adverse reactions.  My question is:  Would is be safe to use them on my entire face twice a day, or is this too much?

Also, I have some (very expensive) La Mer Face Serum that I hate to waste.  Can I use this with your products, and if so, how? I have a sample of the TriReduction P&R Basic that I would like to try on my cuticles and weak, peeling fingernails.  Would this be okay or should I order a different version of the P&R for this?

I will welcome any recommendations you can give me.  I'm so impressed with your products that I don't want to use anything else!

Thank you very much,

J. P. @aol.com

Skin Biology answer: You can use the TriReduction twice daily unless your skin becomes irritated from too much hydroxy acid. It this happens, just reduce the application amount. You can use P&R with La Mer Face Cream. Use the TriReduction P&R on your fingernails and cuticles nightly. We are getting rave reports on P&R improving nails.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I have been using these products (Tri-Reduction & Exfol Cream in combination with the Classic Protect & Restore cream & Exfol Cream) depending on how my skin is acting.  I am 32, with acne prone skin, with some scarring.  I have been using these products for about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks now, and let me tell you, WOW, I have tried EVERYTHING you could imagine on my skin, some of  them helping a little, but this stuff has made a drastic difference in my skin in only 3 weeks, its looks fresh and smooth, I always have good makeup days (you know when your makeup looks really good on your skin) and I use about 1/2 the amount of makeup as I did before, (I have nothing to conceal now!!!) I can't believe these products work so quick!!!!! Well that's all i wanted to say, thank you very much for the MUCH IMPROVED SKIN!!!

I received my 2-Step Skin Renewal System Friday and must say I am so excited about your product.  I have followed the instructions posted by Loren Pickart on beautybuzz; using the Protect & Restore alone first to get my skin used to the product.  I just have to rave I already see the difference.  I had three large red eruptions and several dark spots from old eruptions on my face and THEY HAVE FADED already.  I can not believe this.  I cried yesterday morning because my face looks so wonderful after three days I can only imagine what one, two, three etc. weeks will bring.

Your product has changed my life, really and I have been telling everyone I can about your wonderful product.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Sincerely,

R.L., Florida

I have had a problem with about eight large and embarrassing skin pores on various areas of my face. Maybe they came from teen-age acne but they never went away. My dermatologist suggested surgery whereby the pores is punched out and removed but said the procedure might leave a scar. I had tried Retin-A but it was too irritating.

So I tried your idea on skin pores and it worked! About five or six nights a week, I mixed the Exfol Cream and the Protect & Restore and applied them to the areas of the pores and over other areas of my face. I didn't pay too much attention to what happened but after three months of use, I had forgotten about the larger pores. When I finally remembered and looked for them, I could only find one of them and it was almost normal in size.

This is really great!

Skin Biology response: We have a had a number of reports on facial pore size reduction. It is a pleasant surprise to us also!

Most of my acne scars are gone after three months of P&R#3 and Exfol Cream

I've been using your Protect & Restore Cream (over 7% AHA cream that I already had) for a week now and am loving it to death. My skin has never looked or felt better - no new acne outbreaks, pre-existing acne is almost gone. My skin tone is 100% smoother since I started using it.

Skin Biology is currently patenting and test marketing various products built around his new copper-peptides that are designed to possess greatly enhanced potency, strong breakdown resistance (and can be used with skin exfoliating hydroxy acids for more rapid skin renewal and for scar reduction), a longer duration of action, and very high adherence to skin. The first generation products designed around GHK-Copper performed well in many controlled tests; however, they failed in FDA clinical trials on the healing of difficult-to-heal human wounds. Dr. Pickart is of the opinion that this second generation of copper peptides should have a higher chance of success in difficult clinical trials.
